History of Orient

The town received the name Orient because of its eastern geographic location jutting into New Brunswick, Canada. Back in 1844, before it became a town, the eastern half of the area was organized as Orient for election purposes. Not long after, on April 9, 1856, the town of Orient in Aroostook County was officially incorporated.

Decades later, in 1937, the historic U.S. Border Inspection Station was constructed at the Orient–Fosterville border crossing. That landmark continues to stand as part of local heritage, and on September 10, 2014, the U.S. Inspection Station in Orient was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
