History of Ludlow

The story of our town began on February 29, 1808, when the General Court of Massachusetts granted a half-township to the trustees of Belfast Academy. The following year, in 1809, surveyor Park Holland surveyed the tract. Incoming settlers were able to purchase lots within the Belfast Academy Grant for one dollar per acre in 1826, and later for one dollar and fifty cents per acre in 1840. Throughout that era, the community appeared under the designation of Belfast Academy Grant in both the 1840 and 1850 United States Federal Censuses.

After existing as the Belfast Academy Grant Plantation, the community took a major step forward on March 21, 1864, when it was officially incorporated as a town. It took the name Ludlow, named after the town of Ludlow, Massachusetts.
