History of Woodland
Before its incorporation, the area was known as Township No. 14 Range 3. The earliest recorded choppings in the northern section were made by Fredric Lufkin of Caribou in 1858 and Enoch Philbrick of Buckfield in 1859, the same year Lore Alford of Old Town surveyed the township for settlement into 160-acre lots. Ephraim Barnum of Ware soon arrived as the first settler to bring his family and remain permanently. During the American Civil War, Woodland sent about a dozen men to serve in the Union Army, two of whom lost their lives. Later, portions of Maine's historic Swedish Colony expanded into the area from neighboring New Sweden, contributing significantly to the early cultural settlement.
On March 5, 1880, Woodland was officially incorporated as a town. Its name, describing land abounding in wood, was reportedly suggested from Township No. 14 by Mrs. J.G. Thayer and her daughter, Percees, during a regular town meeting. In 1895, carpenter, educator, and Civil War veteran David Snowman built the Snowman Schoolhouse with assistance from his two sons, leaving behind what stands as the community's only remaining original one-room school.
