History of Bridgewater
The territory that became Bridgewater originally comprised two separate grants issued in 1803: the southern half went to Portland Academy on January 7, and the northern half was granted to Bridgewater Academy in Massachusetts on February 4. In 1827, Nathaniel Bradstreet of Palermo, Maine, arrived with his sons John and Joseph to find a mill site, becoming the first permanent settler to arrive with the intention of making a home. The territory was organized as Bridgewater Plantation in 1844 and later officially incorporated as a town on March 2, 1858.
During the American Civil War, Bridgewater sent 25 soldiers into the service of the Union army, four of whom died. Following the war, local manufacturing and milling operations developed, including lumber mills, a tannery, a starch factory, a steam flour mill, and a buckwheat mill. In later years, Bridgewater became part of the 40-mile-long Maine Solar System Model, hosting the large 3-D model representing the planet Uranus along U.S. Route 1.
