History of Fort Fairfield

Fort Fairfield was first settled in 1816, with Michael Russell, a native of County Tipperary, Ireland, and former member of the Royal West India Rangers, recognized as the founding settler. In 1839, during the border tensions of the Aroostook War, the military outpost that gave the town its name was established along the Aroostook River, named in honor of John Fairfield, who served as governor of Maine during the conflict.

The border dispute that prompted the construction and garrisoning of Fort Fairfield was formally resolved in 1842 by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty. Years later, on March 11, 1858, the town was officially incorporated.
