History of Westfield

The land that became Westfield originated as two half-township grants awarded by the State of Massachusetts to support educational institutions, with Deerfield Academy granted the northern half and Westfield Academy receiving the southern half. James Thorncraft became one of the earliest settlers to clear land in the wilderness here, building a log home in 1839. In the years that followed, early local industry centered around starch production, including a starch factory with two dry houses and a boarding house along Akeley Brook, alongside another facility near Clark Brook.

On March 7, 1905, Westfield was officially incorporated as a town in Aroostook County, Maine. Soon after, in the early 20th century, the Beecher H. Duncan Farm was established at the northern edge of town as a family agricultural enterprise focused on growing potatoes.
