History of Oakfield

Decades later, on February 21, 1878, it was formally organized as a plantation from township T5 R3 WELS, an organization that was reconfirmed in 1895. The community took its next step on February 24, 1897, when it was officially incorporated as a town.
Over the years, Oakfield developed into a major rail junction where two Bangor and Aroostook Railroad lines diverged toward Ashland and Houlton, accommodating as many as 16 passenger trains daily in the 1930s.
