History of Westmanland

Originally designated as Township No. 15, Range 4, the area became part of Maine's historic Swedish Colony, a grouping of Aroostook County communities settled by Swedish immigrants recruited in the 1870s. Beginning in 1879, Swedish immigrant families expanding outward from the neighboring New Sweden colony settled the land, naming it Westmanland after the Västmanland province in Sweden.

These Swedish pioneers formally organized the settlement into Westmanland Plantation on June 1, 1892. Decades later, in 1977, residents voted to organize and incorporate Westmanland as a town.
