History of Mapleton

The earliest European settlers in the area arrived primarily from New Brunswick, later followed by others from elsewhere in the United States, who found forests abundant with maple trees that are thought to have given Mapleton its name. Following incorporation, Mapleton supported seven public schoolhouses with school property valued at $1,100, while its business center in the early 1880s featured a potash factory, a starch factory driven by a 16-horsepower engine, and a rotary sawmill cutting around 10,000 feet of lumber per day.
