History of Portage Lake

Portage Lake was first settled in 1844 and was originally designated as Township 13, Range 6. That same year, Matthew Stevens arrived as the community's first settler, soon followed by other Canadian lumbermen seeking pine. Life took root here, marked by the arrival of Albion Stevens in 1848 as the first child born in the settlement. By 1850, the settlement was officially recognized and organized as a plantation to allow for local voting and administration, and it was organized as a plantation again in 1872. Along the water, Capt. Iverson established the first sawmill and ran the steamboats Portage and Juanita across the lake.

Transportation expanded significantly when the Fish River Railroad was completed to the area in 1902, bringing daily movement of materials and spurring local growth. A few years later, on March 24, 1909, Portage Lake was officially incorporated as a town. In August 2020, the Portage Lake Historical Society preserved this shared heritage by opening the town's first official history museum inside the historic Old Town Hall on Cottage Road.
