History of New Sweden
In March 1870, Governor Joshua Chamberlain appointed former consul William Widgery Thomas Jr. as Maine's Commissioner of Immigration to recruit Swedish immigrants and establish a planned agricultural colony. On July 23, 1870, New Sweden was established when that initial party of 51 Swedish colonists—composed of 22 men, 11 women, and 18 children who traveled from Sweden—arrived in northern Aroostook County under Thomas's direction. Among those first settlers were Nils Olson, who served as the community's first lay preacher, and his wife. In the fall of 1870, the Capitolium was constructed to serve as an immigrant reception center, school, store, church, and town hall.
The settlement continued to grow as the Gustaf Adolph Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1871, a building that is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Formerly designated as Township No. 15, Range 3, the settlement was organized into a plantation on April 6, 1876. Finally, on January 29, 1895, New Sweden was officially incorporated as a town.
