History of St Agatha
In 1847, Menon Ouellette came from Canada and built a lumber camp at the head of Long Lake, clearing land for a farm the following spring. Before its formal municipal organization, this early settlement at the head of the lake was known as Lac A Menon. By 1865, more than thirty families had settled there, with the majority of these early arrivals coming from Madawaska. Carrying French-Canadian and Acadian heritage, these inhabitants established a local economy centered around farming and lumbering. In 1871, the neighboring settlement of Dickeyville was organized into the town of Frenchville, and Lac A Menon became part of Frenchville until its separation.
In the fall of 1889, Bishop Healy established an autonomous parish named Ste. Agathe, with Reverend Ernest Estenave serving as its first pastor. The parish was named in honor of Saint Agatha, a third-century Sicilian saint. A decade later, taking its name from this Catholic parish, St. Agatha officially separated from Frenchville and was incorporated as Maine's 466th town on March 17, 1899.
