History of Presque Isle
The area's modern history began in 1820 when pioneers Lewis Johnson, Charles Johnson, and a Mr. McCrea settled in the adjacent Maysville area near the mouth of Presque Isle Stream. A few years later, Dennis Fairbanks arrived in 1826 and secured a state land grant in 1828, establishing the Fairbanks Mills settlement with a home, sawmill, and gristmill on Presque Isle Stream. During the regional border dispute known as the Aroostook War, the State of Maine constructed a road connecting Monticello to Presque Isle in 1839. Later, on April 4, 1859, Presque Isle was formally incorporated as a town from Plantations F, G, and H, and in 1883, the town annexed adjacent Maysville.
The community continued to grow through the twentieth century. Aroostook State Park became Maine's first state park in 1939 after Presque Isle citizens donated 100 acres of land to the state, and on January 1, 1940, Presque Isle was officially incorporated as a city. Decades later, in August 1978, the Double Eagle II launched from Presque Isle to complete the first successful transatlantic crewed balloon crossing.
