Disc Golf

Disc golf in Aroostook County has grown across community parklands, former family farms, and multi-use trail networks. In Westfield at 862 Houlton Road, Maple Ridge Disc Golf was developed by Owen Holland on 64 acres of family land along Route 1 that held a history of farming and homesteading, with parts crossing former potato fields worked into the 1960s and 1970s. Beginning construction in 2015 and opening for its first full 18-hole season in 2017, Holland carved 16 deeply wooded holes and two open field shots through gently-sloping trails of maple, ash, birch, apple trees, and red pine, including Hole 16 along a distinctive ridge where maples grow outward sideways. The property maintains an active community scene, operating a summer singles league with handicap tracking and ace pools, hosting an annual Fall Finale singles tournament with scratch and handicap formats, and welcoming competitive stops on the Maine Player's Tour circuit.

Further south in Littleton, Shady Ridge Disc Golf Course was established in 2021 at 270 Foster Road with an initial design by Eric McCabe. McCabe shaped the 18-hole layout as a championship venue for tournaments and group events, set on mostly flat, heavily wooded ground along Big Brook. Today it hosts seasonal tournaments, weekly summer leagues, glow rounds, and youth disc golf camps. Nearby, Houlton Community Park expanded southern Aroostook County's municipal recreation in September 2020 through a three-year project organized by the Houlton Rotary Club in partnership with town departments. Originally built as a nine-hole course designed by Rotarian Nate Bodenstab featuring minor elevation changes without rocky crags or riverbeds, it added the Black 9 design created by Kendall Clukey in 2024.

Up through the heart of the County, community and youth traditions remain central. In Caribou, Enman Riverside was an early 18-hole private course established in 2001 that hosted sanctioned competitive events like the Enman Riverside Championships before later closing. Presque Isle offers several venues, including an 18-hole course established in 2019 at the Nordic Heritage Center integrated into its recreational trail network, and the Talon Trails course on the University of Maine at Presque Isle campus, where holes wind around Gentile Hall over moderately hilly, lightly wooded ground with multiple elevation changes alongside a student Disc Sports Club. Serving younger players, the Presque Isle Recreation Department organizes a youth disc golf program for grades 4 through 9 and runs community clinics and Youth Disc Golf Day events from the Sargent Family Community Center.

To the north, the Fort Kent Outdoor Center developed and maintains an 18-hole disc golf course using volunteers to expand warm-weather recreation. Covering approximately 2.5 miles of walking distance, the layout combines tight wooded fairways, open drives, and dramatic elevation changes as it climbs through northern Maine woods into the Lonesome Pine Trails, utilizing existing Nordic ski paths set against the backdrop of the St. John Valley. Players can choose between the full Warrior and Cadet layouts or opt for a 9-hole loop.
