Motorboating and sailing on The County's lakes
Boating in Aroostook County encompasses extensive waterways, from the deep waters of Eagle Lake and Long Lake to the winding Aroostook River. Public launches, marinas, and camp grounds across the county give motorboats and fishing craft open access to the water. Local associations and communities actively steward these lakes, hosting regattas, parades, and inspections throughout the summer season.

For generations, navigating the waters of northern Maine has connected communities and shaped local life. Around 1876, the Aroostook Steamboat Company launched the eighty-foot steamboat named The Nathan Perry on Presque Isle Stream to transport passengers and heavy freight. Built with a hinged smokestack designed to fold down flat to clear low bridges, it navigated the Aroostook River between Presque Isle and Caribou to connect with the railroad, hauled loads of up to 250,000 shingles, and made a voyage to Ashland. Further north along the border, small steamboats such as the Madawaska plied the upper reaches of the Saint John River above Grand Falls to serve towns like Saint Francis, alongside hand-powered ferries and flat-bottomed wooden cargo boats.
Today, boating in Aroostook County centers on expansive lakes and well-maintained public access points. In the Fish River Chain of Lakes, Eagle Lake covers 5,581 acres with depths reaching 136 feet, accommodating motorboats and trolling craft that connect to neighboring waters via thoroughfares. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry manages the public trailered launch in Eagle Lake, where visitors can also find motorized boat rentals at Eagles Landing Lakeside Cottages, pontoon rentals through Eagle Lake Sporting Camps, and marina services from Old Mill Marina. Nearby, the state-managed ramp in Saint Agatha serves Long Lake's 6,000 acres of recreational boating, with watercraft access from Lakeview Camping Resort, while Cross Lake in T16 R5 WELS provides public access through a ramp owned and managed by Irving Paper & Pulp Company. Other large waters include Square Lake, spanning over 8,000 acres in the unorganized townships, and Portage Lake, which features over 2,300 acres with a hard-surface public landing, trailer parking, docks, and an adjacent municipal campground.
Boating waters stretch across southern and central Aroostook County as well. The Town of Weston owns and manages a trailered launch onto East Grand Lake, where boaters can also find Dickinson's Sunset Park Marina in Orient. The Town of Masardis maintains a municipal public ramp providing trailered access to the Aroostook River, while the Aroostook Rod & Gun Club manages the river launch in Ashland. Further boating opportunities include Mattawamkeag Lake's 3,330 acres accessed from a public launch in Island Falls, the 234 acres of Nickerson Lake on the border of New Limerick and Linneus, Madawaska Lake in T16 R4 WELS with its state-assisted ramp involving CSS Development, and Echo Lake within Aroostook State Park, operated by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands.
Local stewardship and community traditions remain central to these waters. Volunteer groups like the Portage Lake Association place seasonal safety hazard buoys and coordinate courtesy boat inspections, while the Friends of Cross Lake, Island Falls Lakes Association, Nickerson Lake Association, and Drews Lake Property Owners Association maintain landings, oversee dams, and champion lake protection. Boaters gather each summer for friendly on-the-water celebrations, including annual Fourth of July boat parades at Eagle Lake and Madawaska Lake, a parade along the Arm and Sandy Beach Road on East Grand Lake organized by the Woodie Wheaton Land Trust, and the Peter's Cove Yacht Club's annual multi-race sailing regatta series on East Grand Lake.
