Preserving the past has long been a community tradition in Aroostook County. In Houlton, Ransford W. Shaw established the Aroostook County Historical and Art Museum in 1937 inside the 1903 Colonial Revival White Memorial Building, where curator Leigh Cummings oversees collections that include the E. B. White Photograph Collection, Ricker College memorabilia, and World War II artwork from the local German prisoner-of-war camp. Further north along U.S. Route 1 in Littleton, retired farmers Cedric and Emily Shaw founded the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum in a former elementary school to showcase potato harvest equipment, vintage tractors, a model potato house, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a historic one-room schoolhouse. Down the road, the Central Aroostook Historical Society was formed in January 2010 by citizens from Blaine, Mars Hill, E Plantation, Robinson, and Westfield to record and safeguard their regional story.

In Presque Isle, an all-volunteer non-profit founded in 1963 maintains the area's material history. Under leadership including curator Kim Smith and researcher Ann Cushman, the Presque Isle Historical Society interprets Victorian domestic life at the 1875 Vera Estey House Museum, which was purchased in 1993 and opened to the public in 1994. The society also restored the former Maysville Grange in 2017 to create the Maysville Museum, featuring exhibits on the Aroostook War, Civil War service, agriculture, and rural schooling. Nearby in Caribou, the municipal Nylander Museum of Natural History houses more than 50,000 geological specimens, fossils, and botanical samples collected by Swedish naturalist Olaf O. Nylander, while the Caribou Historical Society's Whittier Museum displays artifacts of early medicine, churches, and rural farming life alongside a replica schoolhouse. Swedish settlement records, family albums, and local archives are likewise safeguarded by the Stockholm Historical Society Museum.

Along the northern border, French Acadian and frontier history take center stage at several regional historical societies and museums. In Van Buren, the volunteer organization Notre Héritage Vivant was formed in 1973, receiving land from Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ayotte and the 1857 square-hewn timber Morneault House from Mrs. Normande Beaupré to establish the Acadian Village open-air museum, which opened in February 1976 for the American Bicentennial with historic vernacular structures. In Grand Isle, the Musée Culturel du Mont-Carmel opened in 1984 in a decommissioned 1910 Roman Catholic church to protect Acadian religious artifacts and folk art, while Dr. Patrick Lacroix directs the Acadian Archives at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. In Fort Kent, where the historical society was founded on December 4, 1925, exhibits are hosted in a 1912 Bangor & Aroostook Railroad station alongside the Daigle-Dube House and the two-story cedar log Fort Kent Blockhouse dating from the 1838–1839 Aroostook War. West along the river, the St. Francis Historical Society preserves local logging artifacts and photographs, and the Allagash Historical Society documents early Irish and Scottish settlement, town veterans, and St. John River log drives.
