The route

Beginning near Market Square in Houlton, the Court Street & Broadway Residential District route heads south along Court Street, which also carries Route 2A. Once known as the avenue of the potato barons, this corridor showcases stately Queen Anne and Colonial Revival mansions set back on broad, snow-blanketed yards. Winter brings a quiet glow to the neighborhood as homeowners adorn their wrap-around porches, turreted towers, and multistory carriage barns with festive lights and evergreen boughs.

Following Court Street past tree-lined cross streets like Columbia Street and School Street, the architecture reflects the town's prosperous agricultural heritage. The Meduxnekeag River and Pearce Brook flow nearby under ribbons of ice, while bare canopies of ancient hardwoods frame intricate gables and decorative spindlework against the crisp northern sky. The depth of winter accents the woodwork and distinctive rooflines of each well-kept estate.

Turning east toward Broadway, the drive passes handsome churches and town residences before circling back north along Broadway toward downtown. Here, classic nineteenth-century facades and deep front gardens display welcoming seasonal arrangements, with drifts of white snow banking the granite foundations. The gentle loop concludes back near the historic heart of Houlton, where brick storefronts and quiet village lanes complete the tour.
