Swedish immigrants introduced Nordic skiing to northern Maine when they settled New Sweden in 1870, relying on skis for essential winter transportation as well as sport. For decades into the twentieth century, local children skied miles to school while adults glided to work and shops. New Sweden craftsmen earned renown for making high-quality wooden skis, and its athletic club raced in white ski suits at winter carnivals during the 1920s. Today, this heritage remains honored by a commemorative plaque at the Stockholm Historical Museum and through exhibits of antique handcrafted wooden skis, poles, and archival photographs displayed in the main lodge at Presque Isle's Nordic Heritage Center, now managed by Northern Maine Community Trails.
The modern revival of cross-country skiing in Aroostook County expanded through investments by the Maine Winter Sports Center and Libra Foundation in the late 1990s, developing premier sporting facilities. Northern Maine Community Trails in Presque Isle offers over thirty miles of public trails, including twenty kilometers of trails maintained by volunteer grooming, a 2.5-kilometer lighted loop for skate and classic skiing, a cross-country terrain park, a 26-room waxing building, and a 30-point biathlon range that has hosted World Cup biathlon races. Nearby, Aroostook State Park provides roughly fifteen miles of machine-groomed classic ski trails with grooved double-set tracks looping through forest and farmland terrain around Quaggy Jo Mountain.
Further north, the Fort Kent Outdoor Center was established in 1999 as an athlete training center and maintains a 25-kilometer homologated cross-country trail network, with roughly forty kilometers total for skate and classic skiing alongside a biathlon stadium, a 3-kilometer lighted loop, and a paved roller ski loop. The venue has welcomed the 2004 IBU World Cup, U.S. Biathlon National Championships, U.S. Biathlon Collegiate National Championships, the MPA State Nordic Ski Meet, and local gatherings like the Ben Paradis Invitational Relay and Thursday evening Ladies' Ski Night. Through its Jalbert youth program, junior coaching introduces children in grades K through six to cross-country ski traditions and prepares athletes for high school and international racing.
Throughout the county, community-tended trails welcome skiers into scenic woods and open fields. In Madawaska, the volunteer-led Four Seasons Trail Association grooms trails offering classic and skate skiing with vistas across the St. John River Valley, hosting junior lessons and competitive events after once hosting the 2010 SuperTour sprint race finals. In Caribou, trails wind through rolling woods along Route 161 by the Caribou Country Club, while the Caribou High School Nordic center provides lighted tracks, snowmaking, and a waxing lodge. Westmanland maintains over thirty-five kilometers of trails from its town office, New Sweden provides loop trails near its elementary school, and the Aroostook Ski Touring Center in Ashland maintains ten kilometers of classic trails in a double figure eight pattern, anchored by a warming lodge with a fireplace and historical photographs.
